TAKE the PLEDGE

posted in TAKE the PLEDGE |

Take the Pledge to use alternative transit on April 18th in honor of Dump the Pump Day.  Take public transportation, walk to the corner store, bike to work or carpool with a friend or colleague.  Help demonstrate that alternative transit is viable in our city!

To Take the Pledge, click on ‘comments’ below.  Feel free to tell us how you plan to use alternative transit.  Then check back to share your experiences.

I ride my bicycle to work most days and I’ll make sure to commute by bike on April 18. I’ll also try to spread word to my coworkers and encourage them to leave their cars at home.

Reducing single occupant automobile commutes can help solve many of Savannah’s most pressing problems. By leaving our cars at home, we can reduce traffic congestion, decrease pollution and lessen our dependence on foreign oil. Plus, everyone who selects an alternative commute frees up a parking space for someone who can’t or won’t leave the car at home. Those who walk or bicycle to work can gain additional health benefits from engaging in physical activity.

I’m glad SDRA and its partner organizations are leading the way on this important issue. Having fewer cars on the streets our city will certainly make Savannah a healthier, safer and more inviting city for residents and visitors alike.

I pledge to ride my bicycle to work, weather permitting. There are no bicycle racks at my place of work, so securing the bike is a problem.I will cautiously ( since I am only a part-time worker), begin to make suggestions about bike racks and commuting as a viable strategy for any organization.

I usually drive part of the way to work (1 mile) and walk the rest (1.25 miles). On most days, it would just take too long if I walked the whole way. However, on April 18, I am in for the long haul. Who knows, it might inspire me to do it more often or even all the time.

I plan on continuing my bike rides to work from Isle of Hope to the Health Dept on Eis. Drive twice a week Weds. and Fri.s. I pray that motorists will give me room on the road while passing especially along LaRoche Ave. Hopefully,”Dump the Pump” will bring out more bicycles and it will bring out more safety awareness from motorists!
